Lobaki Virtual Reality
Summer 2019

Throughout summer 2019, I had the privilege of working as an intern for Lobaki, a virtual reality company based in Jackson, MS. I was initially brought on to develop processes for architectural visualization, a discipline that blends my interests in creative CAD, architecture, and VR. It soon became apparent, though, that my job description for the summer would include much more.

Throughout the summer, I used CAD to develop 3D assets for commercial virtual reality applications, composed original backing tracks for a gamified concussion therapy application, created demos of photogrammetry techniques in various softwares, and explore the amazing world of creating realistic spaces and buildings for virtual worlds. I also learned the basics of VR application development and how to curate experiences for first-time users. I even got to help design the company's new offices, and I created a photorealistic virtual walkthrough of the space using the architectural visualization techniques I was learning.

One of my biggest projects of the summer was designing a virtual meeting space for educators around the world to convene in the metaverse. The space had to be visually engaging but not so overstimulating as to detract from the engagements taking place inside of the space. I created a modern barn-like structure made primarily of wooden beams and glass with a large geodesic dome presentation space in the center. Smaller meeting spaces are scattered throughout the building, which sits on a large natural terrain. Paths and tunnels wind through and around the building, giving visitors a natural sense of exploration.

Other tasks I took on over the summer included conducting user research and client visits at a local children's cancer hospital for a needle therapy immersion app; running the company's booth at the
Mississippi Association for Career and Technical Education conference; running workshops that put dozens of teachers and visitors in VR; creating documentation on how to sculpt a creation in VR and then 3D print it; designing and constructing a room-scale green screen; and serving as a consultant for the maker space on Jackson State University's campus.
